France introduced specific legislation (Code de la Santé Publique (Public Health Code) Article L.5232-1.) relating to protection of consumers hearing when using portable music players with headphones.
This national requirement was later withdrawn when equivalent technical requirements were introduced to standards employed by the R&TTE (1999/5/EC) and Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU).

Products after January 2013, the presence of the CE mark shows compliance with equivalent requirements, and no separate declaration is required.
